Audition Requirements
(Revised 9/6/06)
Cadet Strings
Students will be asked to play one solo of choice demonstrating technical
proficiency (up to three minutes in length). Solo choice should be submitted
to the WVYS office a minimum of two weeks prior to the audition. Some
sight reading may be requested.
Memorized scales (Quarter note = 60 Metronome Marking) will be required
as follows:
Violin – Scales:
1 octave D and A
2 octave G
1 octave arpeggio for D, A & G
Viola - Scales:
1 octave G and D
2 octave C
1 octave arpeggio for G, D & C
Cello – Scales:
1 octave G and D
2 octave C
Bass – Scales:
1 octave D and G
Youth Strings Ensemble
If you are a new student you need to play one solo of choice demonstrating
technical proficiency up to three minutes in length and required scales
listed below. You may be asked to do some sight reading. Solo choice should
be submitted to the WVYS office a minimum of two weeks prior to the audition
If you are a current member interested in moving up, the solo is unnecessary
but you will be required to play the scales (Quarter note = 60 Metronome
Marking) and etudes as listed below. Some sight reading may be requested
To demonstrate bowing proficiency, all students will be asked to play
memorized scales using quarter notes, eighth notes and eighth notes slurred.
Violin – Scales:
2 octaves D and C Major, 2 octave arpeggio in D and C Major
2 octave A,G and B flat. 2 octave arpeggio in A, G and B flat
1 octave F and E, 1 octave arpeggio in F and E
1 octave g minor, 1 octave arpeggio in g minor
2 octave chromatic on G
Etude- Kayser, Opus 20

Viola – Scales:
2 octaves C, D, and E, 2 octave arpeggio in C, D and E
1 octave G, A, F, and B flat, 1 octave arpeggio in G, A, F, and B flat
2 octave chromatic scale on C
Etude- Wohlfahrt Opus 74 No. 6 and Second Variation
(Music available at the Youth Symphony office in the Clay Center or call

Cello- Scales:
2 octaves C and D, 2 octave arpeggio in C and D
1 octave A, B flat, G and F, 1 octave arpeggio in E, A, B flat, G and
F
2 octaves chromatic on C

Bass – Scales
1 octave C,G, D, E, F and B flat, 1 octave arpeggio for C, D, E, F and

Youth Orchestra- Strings
All scales need to be memorized with quarter notes equaling 60 Metronome
Marking
To demonstrate bowing proficiency, all students will be asked to play
memorized scales using quarter notes, eighth notes and eighth notes slurred
demonstrating spiccato and legato.
Violin-
Scales: Students wishing to audition for 1st violin position need to
play:
3 octaves G , A, Bb, C
g and a minor with 3 octave arpeggio of each scale
ALL students need to play the following:
2 octaves D, A, E, F, B flat, A flat, E flat , D flat ( up to four sharps
and 4 flats)
2 octave arpeggio in D, A, E, F, B flat, A flat, E flat, D flat
3 octave G Major and A scale, and 3 octave arpeggio in G Major and A
2 octave chromatic on G

Youth Orchestra & Youth Winds – Woodwinds and Brass
Students will be asked to memorize and play scales up to 4 sharps and
4 flats. In order to demonstrate technical proficiency students will be
asked to play a solo of choice (Grade Level 4 minimum) up to three minutes
in length. Students may also be asked to do some sight reading.
